The installation elaborates on the previous version presented at the exhibition Towards a Museum of Trust and the Mediterranean Dialogue in Lampedusa. Installed at the Mucem Marseilles passing the baton of witnesses that launch a strong signal within the contemporary debate on migration flows and the right to international human mobility. Located on one of the towers of the Fort Saint Jean perimeter, that is the defensive bastion of the ancient port of Marseilles. The flags, which have always been responsible for the representation of identity and places, are here reconceptualized. The materials chosen by the artist take on the high visibility technical textiles we learned to recognize in the chronicles of immigration-related tragedies. The presence of this material in a multitude of images involving citizens, operators and cultural mediators has become an emblem of the complexities of immigration. The tower was built in the age of Roi René as a fortress, since then its presence and sensitivity have certainly changed, yet Europe (but also America post Trump) lives a strong conflict not only in identity but in geopolitical action and intervention, dissipated in hostility issues, economic sustainability and the awakening of an increasingly ingenious and politicized xenophobia. The installation remodels the experience of a common object (the flag, always a seal of national identity), bringing it into an aesthetic and ethical sublimation, addressing not only those who come from the sea but it becomes a tribute to one of the most multicultural Mediterranean cities: Marseilles.

L’installazione rielabora la versione presentata alla mostra Verso un Museo della Fiducia e del Dialogo del Mediterraneo di Lampedusa e approda al Mucem di Marsiglia in un passaggio di testimone che vuole lanciare un segnale forte all’interno del dibattito contemporaneo sui flussi migratori e il diritto alla mobilità umana internazionale. Si è scelto di collocare l’installazione sulla torre di Roi René, nel perimetro del Fort Saint Jean, antico baluardo posto a difesa del vecchio porto di Marsiglia e visibile sia dalla città che dal mare. Le bandiere, da sempre preposte alla rappresentazione dell’identità e dei luoghi, vengono qui riconcettualizzate; i materiali scelti dall’artista riprendono i tessuti tecnici ad alta visibilità che abbiamo imparato a riconoscere nelle cronache delle tragedie legate all’immigrazione in una moltitudine di immagini che vedono coinvolti cittadini, operatori e mediatori culturali. Probabilmente dall’edificazione della torre Roi René, la sensibilità è certamente cambiata, eppure l’Europa (ma anche l’America post Trump) vive un forte conflitto non solo identitario, ma di azione e intervento geopolitico, scissa in problematiche di accoglienza, sostenibilità economica e il risveglio di una sempre più ingerente e politicizzata xenofobia. L’installazione rimodula l’esperienza di un oggetto comune (la bandiera, da sempre sigillo di identità nazionale) portandola in una sublimazione estetica ed etica, rivolgendosi non solo a chi arriva dal mare ma nello specifico vuole essere un omaggio a una delle città più multiculturali del Mediterraneo.
