PAN-GEA

A small rock, an atoll and an archetypal structure with the shape of a tiny house, like a votive niche. Because a house doesn’t have to be measurable, it can also be a symbol, a concept that can be real in the liminal dimension of an augmented reality. Starting from the altars made of votive bread for Saint Joseph in Salemi, a structure was realized on an islet, a mythological strip of land on which symbols, solar and ritual figures were born. Not leaves but canes and trunks, not blossoms but suns and spirals, and flowers and spikes, displayed in an ornamental way, where star symbols are connected to the earth and they seem to come out of it. The bread decoration is removed from the votive altars, which now appear undressed and full of edges and shapes of a supernatural and hieratic dimension. The building with no doors and no windows seems to be continuously welcoming just like any place where you can go in and out, just like us becoming open minded and ready to welcome.
In Arkad the main theme is the Ark used as a metaphor for existence and cooperation. It’s all about surviving on a land towards which we all sail in a turbulent sea of geo-political problems and climate priorities of the last 10 years.Therefore this atoll full of symbols, this organic rock with its structure partly house and partly sanctuary becomes an emerging welcoming land and at the same time it becomes something far away, something lost in the psychic waters of time. A place, an architectural structure, a series of symbols which metaphysically vibrate like a hyper-object beyond space and time, the access to that sacred dimension both individual and universal, both micro and macro cosmic.

Un piccolo scoglio, un atollo, sormontato da una struttura archetipale a forma di casa, le cui dimensioni rimandano alle edicole votive, perché la casa non è un volume fisico con delle dimensioni reali ma un simbolo, un luogo concettuale che prende forma nella dimensione liminale della realtà aumentata. Rifacendosi alla tradizione dei pani votivi e agli altari di San Giuseppe, si configura una struttura che emerge su un piccolo isolotto, una terra mitologica, un lembo su cui crescono simboli, figurazioni solari e rituali, in un fitto intreccio organico. Non foglie ma bastoni e fusti, non fiori ma soli e spirali, e fiori e spighe disposti secondo motivi ornamentali, dove i simboli astrali sono immediatamente connessi al suolo e da esso sembrano emergere. Il fitto intreccio degli altari votivi viene spostato, riportato alla terra mentre la struttura, che solitamente li sorregge, è spoglia e assume con le sue spigolosità e forme a una dimensione ieratica e ultraterrena.
Il tema portante di Arkad* (la mostra collettiva all’interno della quale l’opera è stata presentata) è quello dell’arca come metafora dell’essere e dell’agire insieme; tema legato a suggestioni di terre sommerse ed emerse, approdi, tratte e navigazioni che hanno raggiunto nell’ultimo decennio una straordinaria corrispondenza tra problemi geopolitici e urgenze climatiche, il cui unico comune denominatore è quello della sopravvivenza, presente e futura. Così questo atollo carico di simboli, questo scoglio organico con la sua struttura un po’ casa, un po’ santuario, è sia una terra pronta ad emergere e accogliere ma è anche qualcosa di lontano che si perde nella acque psichiche del tempo. Un luogo, un’architettura, una serie di simboli nel loro insieme vibrano metafisicamente come un iper-oggetto che piega spazio e tempo, che è poi l’accesso a quella dimensione del sacro che è sia intima che universale, capace di raccordare micro e macro-cosmi.
