NEURONAL PLOT

In Neuronal Plot, a cycle of artworks created for Manifesta 12 Biennial, the cartographic representation of the planisphere is graphically elaborated, referring to the synaptic connections of the neurons present in the hemispheres of the brain. On the one hand, the white tangle suggests a political vision of the world linked to the flows of mobility and migration, a world understood as a place that finds its reason beyond identity and geographical belonging; on the other hand, the need for the mind to become a “world” in terms of interior landscape built through heterogeneous elements. This cycle was part of Il Traffico, a project curated by Collective intelligence. As the title suggests, the project reflects on political, physical and symbolic representations of the traffic. In Neuronal Plot there is either the need to recognize oneself in a larger community, possibly capable of canceling political and national boundaries, gender and species identities or the idea of “world” as an inner construction, as a sequence of cognitive maps and cultural centers that gravitate around an invisible nucleus. The earth, in this sense, has always been the place that is home to be lived but which cannot be seen in its entirety by its inhabitants. Yet there is a lymph that sustains all processes and events that can be perceived in that formula of the tabula of Hermes Trismegistus which sees the high as the low, the great as the small, the exterior as the interior, the together as the monad, the body as the spirit.

Il Traffico, 5x5x5 Program of Manifesta 12, Palermo 2018
In questo ciclo di opere realizzato per Manifesta 12, la rappresentazione cartografica del planisfero viene elaborata graficamente, rimandando alle connessioni sinaptiche dei neuroni presenti negli emisferi del cervello; un intreccio che da una parte suggerisce una visione politica del mondo legata ai flussi di mobilità e migrazione, un mondo come luogo che trova la sua ragione al di là di identità e appartenenze geografiche; dall’altra la necessità della mente di farsi “mondo”, cioè riconnettendo elementi e dimensioni eterogenee relativi a un paesaggio interiore. Il ciclo è stato ospitato all’interno di Traffico, una mostra curata da Collective intelligence. Come suggerisce il titolo della mostra, il progetto riflette sulla forma del traffico nelle sue molteplici rappresentazioni politiche, reali, fisiche e simboliche. In Neuronal Plot sono presenti sia il bisogno di riconoscersi in una comunità più estesa, possibilmente capace di annullare confini politici, identità nazionale, di genere e di specie, sia l’idea di “mondo” come costruzione interiore, una sequenza di mappe cognitive e culturali che gravitano attorno a un nucleo invisibile, capace quindi di raccogliere infiniti punti di vista. La terra, in tal senso, da sempre e per sempre, è il luogo che ospita la vita ma che non può essere vista nella sua interezza da chi la abita, sia relativamente alla superficie percorribile che nella sua quantità maggiore, ovvero il suo interno invisibile e inaccessibile. Eppure c’è una linfa che sostiene tutti i processi e gli eventi che può essere percepita in quella formula della tabula di Trismegisto che vede l’alto come il basso, il grande come il piccolo, l’esterno come l’interno, l’insieme come la monade, il corpo come lo spirito.
