BET_LEHEM / LA CASA DEL PANE @ SALEMI
BET_LEHEM / BREAD HOUSE is the second stage of a touring exhibition, essentially characterized by a metal frame of a house in its most archetypal forms, that is designed to include within it processes and formalization activated through workshops. The installation was realized during the artist’s residency at the communities’ houses managed by C.O.R.F SOCIAL COOPERATIVE Onlus. BET_LEHEM, translated from Aramaic as “BREAD HOUSE”, the meaning of which is the place for hospitality and basic needs of nourishment and shelter. The city of Salemi in west Sicily, is linked to the “traditional dinners or altars of St. Joseph”; here the bread has a special emphasis on the theme of the sacre and the conviviality. The artist incorporates a small metal frame altar in the installation (that was previously used and made available by a local family). On this structure the participants to the workshop deliver not only the usual bread loaves but also shapes of bread created according to their suggestions and cultural worlds. These different backgrounds often have a story of pain in common, that BET_LEHEM symbolizes, wishing to the participants a real renaissance in their new community. The installation is grafted in the heart of the local tradition, presenting itself as a fundamental moment of encounter between different cultures and generations, but above all, as a syncretic tribute by those who have physically realized it in the city of Salemi.

BET_LEHEM/LA CASA DEL PANE è la seconda tappa di un dispositivo artistico itinerante formalizzato da una struttura in metallo che rappresenta una casa resa nelle sue forme più archetipali. Esso è concepito per includere al suo interno processi attivati attraverso dei workshop incentrati sulla panificazione. L’artista ha vissuto, per alcune settimane, nelle comunità gestite dalla Cooperativa Sociale C.O.R.F Onlus che portava avanti un progetto Sprar, Sistema di protezione per richiedenti asilo e rifugiati.
In aramaico il termine Bet-Lehem viene tradotto come “CASA DEL PANE”, cioè il luogo dell’ospitalità e dei bisogni primari, del nutrimento e del riparo. A Salemi, città legata alla tradizione delle “cene o altari di San Giuseppe”, il tema del pane ha un particolare accento sul tema del sacro e della convivialità. L’artista, ingloba nella installazione una piccola struttura in metallo di altare su cui vengono montati i pani votivi (già usata in precedenza e messa a disposizione da una famiglia del luogo) ma rimette la figuratività del pane alle suggestioni e all’immaginario dei partecipanti al workshop. L’installazione si innesta nel cuore della tradizione locale, presentandosi come fondamentale momento di incontro tra culture e generazioni diverse ma soprattutto come omaggio sincretico di coloro che la hanno materialmente realizzata.
